Ati Manel - Sardines in Olive Oil
These whole sardines from Portugal's Atlantic coast come packed in a golden olive oil that complements their natural flavour. The sardines have good bite and depth with that distinctive oceanic quality that makes Portuguese preserves worth seeking out.
These sardines are particularly good simply served—try them on thick-cut toast with a few cornichons and a squeeze of lemon. For a more substantial dish, break them up and fold through warm waxy potatoes with flat-leaf parsley, capers and plenty of black pepper. The oil from the tin deserves attention too—drizzle it over the finished dish for an extra layer of flavour or use it as the base for a quick vinaigrette.
Ingredients: Sardines (Sardina Pilchardus): min. 70.8%, Olive Oil: 28.2%, Salt.
Net weight: 125g

ATI Manel emerged from a basement discovery—when designer Luís Mendonça unearthed his great-grandfather's forgotten canning archives, complete with handwritten recipe books and vintage lithographic stones. This treasure trove from the 1940s revealed Manel's meticulous approach to fish preservation during Portugal's golden age of canning.
Working with Adriano Ribeiro of José Gourmet fame, Luís has brought these recipes back to life. Their sardines taste distinctly Portuguese—clean and delicate with that characteristic Atlantic minerality that pairs brilliantly with a squeeze of lemon and crusty bread. The tuna preparations shine equally bright, showcasing the robust flavour that made Portugal's tinned fish celebrated worldwide.
Sourcing exclusively from Portugal and neighbouring Galicia, they maintain the exacting standards detailed in those basement notebooks—from precise cooking times to thoughtful seasoning. Each beautifully designed tin reflects both family pride and a genuine respect for ingredients that would make the original Ati Manel smile with recognition.
